What Makes a Happy Pig?

All bacon is created the same, right?

Durocs peacefully sleeping.  Notice the little runt!
We don't believe that here at Nature's Intent Farms.  So what makes our pork so much different than pork purchased at your local grocery store?  We call it the "Happy Pig Effect."

We believe that pigs were created to be...pigs!  So we do just that.

Our pigs are allowed to roam and play in an open pasture.  Yes, that's right...play!  If you have never seen a pig play, then you are missing out!!!  Pigs LOVE to play with each other.  They bite each other's ears, they play "tag" by running up to one, tagging it, then running off and being chased by the other.  They turn around in 180-degree turns like a bucking bronco, then dart off to be chased by others.  Pigs truly are a fun and enjoyable animal to watch when allowed room to roam.

Pigs act like pigs!
Yes, our pigs sleep a lot.  Here are some 8-week-old pigs laying on top of each other to share body warmth!  And, yes, pigs snore!
That's what makes us different than the pork raised in confinement houses.  Yes, those pigs that live in confinement houses are well-regulated.  Their antibiotics are given at the exact time every time.  Their feed schedule is regulated down to the minute.  The pigs grow on a fixed schedule, and they have a butcher date set well in advance.

Frankly, we don't.  We have pigs that grow differently than other pigs.  Some pack on the pounds quickly;  others not so much.  We don't force-feed our pigs.  We allow them to choose when they want to eat.  If they want to nap, then so be it.  If they want to play tag, then so be it.  If they want to eat, then so be it!

The pigs are free to be pigs!
Six little porkers debating whether to head outside in the rain and eat or wait in the barn until it stops!

And that's also where our pigs eat differently than confinement hogs.  Our pigs are free to roam on acres full of various grasses and weeds.  Yes, weeds!  And they just LOVE to root!!!  What is rooting, you ask?

Well, outside of sleeping, it's a pig's favorite activity!!!  Rooting is when a pig takes its strong snout and shoves it into the earth and looks for morsels!  With their snout in the earth, they walk forward, searching for bugs, grubs, earthworms, acorns, and any other delicious treat they can find.  Pigs will literally spend hours a day searching for treats!

We believe it's this natural trait of a pig (they aren't taught to root, they just do it!) that makes our pork taste so much different than the meat from confinement hogs.  Sure, our pigs might take a little bit longer to fatten up, but we believe the extra time is worth it when it comes to taste.  Not only do they eat naturally, but their strong muscles are developed from the running, playing, and daily rooting.
Our pigs love to post for photos!
Plus, when it comes to sheer enjoyment, who doesn't want to watch pigs play tag and search for worms in wide-open prairie?  You see, we aren't just creating happy pigs.  We are creating happy farmers.  And in the end, our goal is that the happy pigs and happy farmer creates a happy customer.

Come taste the difference!!!
